Education

Education is one of the pillars of the Vienna BioCenter. Approximately 5,000 students pursue their Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degrees at the Vienna BioCenter, affiliated to one of the Universities represented on campus: University of Vienna or Medical University of Vienna.

All trainings are multidisciplinary, entirely in English and offer fully-funded positions. By clicking on the links below you will find detailed information.

PRE-DOCTORAL EDUCATION

Pre-doctoral education oppurtunities include internships, a summerschool, BSc and MSc studies. The BSc studies in biology provide a broad basic understanding of biology and its subdisciplines by introducing basic concepts in biology as well as chemistry, physics, statistics, ethics, and gender issues. The MSc studies cover a broad range of subjects providing in-depth expertise, experimental skills and scientific competencies.

DOCTORAL EDUCATION

The Vienna BioCenter fosters the training of young scientists in a vibrant and synergistic environment in one of the world´s top-ranked places to work and live. At the doctoral level students have a choice of programs depending on their backgrounds and their future research interest.

The Vienna BioCenter PhD Program is a doctoral school of the University of Vienna and Medical University of Vienna in partnership with the four research institutes (IMP, IMBA, GMI, Max Perutz Labs) on campus. The Vienna Biocenter PhD Program is a truly collaborative doctoral program embedded into an exceptionally diverse and inter-sectoral framework. There are two calls each year opening in March and September respectively and the number of positions varies from call to call.

The Vienna Doctoral School in Cognition, Behavior and Neuroscience (VDS CoBeNe) focuses on the influence of social and ecological factors on human and non-human cognition and behavior, understanding its underlying cognitive, emotional, physiological, and neurological bases, and probing their evolutionary origins and development. Admission to the program is via regular topical calls and individual calls from group leaders.

The Vienna Doctoral School of Ecology and Evolution (VDS EE) is devoted to educating students in advancing our knowledge on the ecology and evolution of extant and ancestral organisms, populations and communities. Admission to the program is via individual calls from group leaders.

The Vienna Doctoral School in Microbiology and Environmental Science (VDS MES) offers interdisciplinary training at the interfaces of microbiology, ecology, and environmental science. Calls for fully funded PhD positions are open each year in spring and fall.

POST-DOCTORAL EDUCATION

You can join the Vienna BioCenter as a postdoc in two ways:

Fellows can apply directly to the research groups; please send the group leader an email with a cover letter, CV and the names of two references

or through

The Vienna International Postdoctoral Program (VIP), which is a highly competitive postdoctoral fellowship program at the Vienna BioCenter currently co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 program.
