Vienna BioCenter Core Facilities GmbH (VBCF) is a non-profit organization providing scientific infrastructure operated, maintained and developed by highly qualified experts. We are situated at the Vienna BioCenter (VBC), one of Europe’s leading multi-disciplinary biomedical research campuses.

The PlantS Facility provides plant growth and phenotyping services for the researchers at the VBC and beyond. We operate 22 high-tech phytotrons which are capable of simulating a wide range of global environments and abiotic plant stress conditions. One of these phytotrons is equipped with an automated high-throughput (HT) plant phenotyping system that monitors the growth and health of the plants through a large set of parameters extracted from RGB images taken regularly over the course of an experiment. The HT phenotyping capabilities will be further extended via the recently approved FFG infrastructure project “PHENOPlant”, where plants will be transported on conveyor belts from highly controlled growing areas to state-of-the-art sensors (including e.g. hyperspectral-, chlorophyll fluorescence-, thermal- and 3D-imaging).

We are looking for a Bioinformatician/Data Scientist to join our team and help us build our data analysis pipelines.

Your responsibilities:

  • Development and maintenance of a data management system for HT phenomic data
  • Supporting the planning, construction and implementation phase (IT, data management, validation) of PHENOPlant
  • Quality control and analysis of HT phenomic data incl. statistical analysis and visualization
  • Modelling of environmental, genotypic and phenotypic data incl. GWAS
  • Development of web-based tools for data management and analysis

Your profile:

  • MSc, PhD or other extensive experience working in bioinformatics
  • Expert in data analysis and statistics, ideally with experience in time-course data modeling
  • Expert in Python and/or R programming
  • Experience in web-based software development is an asset
  • Excellent soft skills, communication and writing skills in English (working language)

 

This position offers a highly professional and stimulating environment with very attractive company benefits and is available from July 1st, 2019. The salary is planned with min. 2.700 EUR gross/month (38hrs) and can be increased depending on experience and qualifications.

We are looking for a Phenotyping Specialist to join our team for the operation of our phenotyping platforms (PHENOTron, PHENOBox and PHENOPlant).

Your responsibilities:

  • Daily operation and care of our phenotyping platforms: experiment design, project realization, platform maintenance and further development
  • HT phenotyping method development and validation  
  • Data management, analysis and interpretation in collaboration with our Data Scientist
  • Custom image analysis using the LemnaTec OS software
  • Implementation of new phenotyping technologies and services
  • Contribution and further development of the APPN initiative, active participation in international plant phenotyping initiatives and networks especially ESFRI EMPHASIS

Your profile:

  • MSc, PhD or other extensive experience working in plant biology, plant(eco)physiology, or plant biotechnology
  • Experience in sensor-based plant phenotyping (especially chlorophyll fluorescence/PAM imaging and hyperspectral imaging) or even in the hands-on operation of HT plant phenotyping platforms is a big asset
  • Experience in large-scale (phenotyping) experiment design, method development, validation and statistics (basic knowledge of R is an asset)
  • Knowledge of standard image processing and image analysis techniques and related tools is an asset
  • Experience in working in multidisciplinary teams and basic knowledge of project management and quality management systems is an asset
  • Excellent soft skills, communication and (scientific) writing skills in English (working language)

The Histopathology Facility of Vienna Biocenter Core Facilities GmbH (VBCF) offers technical expertise and material resources corresponding to a broad range of state-of-the art histotechnology and immunohistochemistry services. The facility also fulfills the role of training individual researchers for optimal use of its equipment.

We are seeking a full time research assistant to perform routine and specialized histology procedures, to prepare high-quality samples for microscopic and digital pathology analyses and for qualitative and quantitative morphologic studies.

Your responsibilities:

  • Preparation of tissue samples for histopathology, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, in situ hybridization and subsequent microscopic analysis.
  • Accurate sampling, fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning and staining of tissues from a variety of model organisms and in vitro systems.
  • Routine laboratory maintenance and quality checks.
  • Participation in quality control reviews and didactic discussions with the pathologist.
  • Facilitation of optimal digitization of samples in close cooperation with the BioOptics Core.
  • Development and optimization of automated immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization protocols in conjunction with the pathologist.
  • Training of new researchers in the use of selected laboratory equipment.

Your profile:

  • Diploma - biomedical research assistant or laboratory technician (BMA or equivalent), required; Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biology or a related area, preferred
  • Knowledge of GLPs and basic understanding of common laboratory equipment and the preparation of basic solutions and reagents
  • Familiarity with basic molecular biology protocols, laboratory animal research methods and necropsy procedures, desirable
  • Basic understanding of, or exposure to, sectioning and staining of tissues or cells would be welcome.
  • Good written and spoken communication skills in English along with a working knowledge of German.

The Histopathology Facility provides high quality services, training and technical support to researchers on the Vienna Biocenter Campus and external users. It provides an array of histotechnology methods in tandem with histology and pathology services tailored to the specific needs of each project ranging from experimental design, tissue sampling, processing, classical and special histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, comparative pathology analyses and documentation.

Currently, we are in the process of acquiring a multiplex, high- throughput staining system that will replace manual staining procedures, used routinely at the lab.

We are looking for a FEMtech student who, in collaboration with experienced immunostaining specialist, will be responsible for setting up and testing the equipment and implementing currently used protocols for automatization. She will learn the principles of experimental designs, histological samples preparation, immunochistochemisty and immunofluorescence protocol design. Furthermore, she will participate in the data analyses and interpretation and discussion with veterinary pathologist. Additionally, she will be introduced to daily operations of the facility and trained to follow GLPs.

Requirements: Female student, currently enrolled for a Bachelors or Master studies in a science or technology field.

Project duration: 3-6 months (28.5 hrs/week working time)

Salary: 1.400 Euro/month
