Fly food

The VDRC Fly Food Kitchen (FFK) can provide the following media types for maintaining Drosophila stocks:

  • “Normal” media (our standard recipe), which is suitable for most Drosophila stocks, can be ordered with or without Nipagin (anti-fungal protection). VDRC "Normal" Fly Food Media Recipe.
  • “Powerfood”, equivalent to Nutri-Fly™ "German Food" Sick Fly Formulation (Genesee Scientific), is a rich medium on which flies will produce many progeny, so it is especially suitable for weak stocks. Powerfood is available on special request.

 

We provide fly food by the box: one box holds 100 tubes or 36 bottles. Tubes/bottles (polypropylene) can be ordered plugged (with cotton wool for tubes, foam plugs for bottles) or unplugged, with or without dry yeast added.

 

Fly food kitchen

Fly media is available to Vienna BioCenter researchers and other fly groups in the Vienna region who are able to collect the media themselves. It must be ordered online via the MyVBCF VDRC portal and orders must be placed by Sunday 23:59 for cooking during the following week and delivery the week after.

Fly food is provided in cardboard boxes which are reused approximately ten times. All empty boxes must be returned to the FFK so that they can be oven baked to sterilize for reuse.

 

Notice on current situation:

For the duration of the VBC6 renovations, the FFK is temporarily located off-campus at AGES (Österreichische Agentur für Gesundheit und Ernährungssicherheit GmbH, Spargelfeldstraße 191, 1220 Vienna). Media is currently delivered to the VBC twice a week. Please plan in advance and discuss to arrange collection times.
